Paris Autumn Salon (Salon d'Automne)

oct 1, 2011 by Ewa Kozłowska

The photography “Il etait une fois à l’Est” in English “Once Upon a Time in the East”, which has been qualified to be exhibited in Paris Autumn Salon, is a part of the bigger series of portraits, which soon I am going to present in the Polish House in Vilnius. It is a kind of presentation of the portraits of people from the East Europe and at the same time my debate on the contemporary photography. I have chosen the work which is an example of the classical stream inspired by figurative painting and humanistic photography. The point of view and the workshop are the main elements of the debate on the contemporary photography, the debate which I am amplifying and on which I am going to work in the next year.

I am trying to show with this work that in the contemporary world, full of alienation, it is the human being that should be the most important in the photography, and above all we should remember about it. That is why there is no reluctance to the past or classical view in me. I am also aware that imitating Avant-garde blindly is not what the contemporary photography should be because then it forgets about the most important aspect – the relations with another human. In principle I would call it the alternative to Avant-garde. It is not my intension to make myself more important by using noble techniques or to duplicate other artists’ reflection, or to reject previous experience. I propose that what the photographers sees should become the most important thing in photography. The art of photography is first of all the sight of the photographer and it is what should be the main topic of discussion. His/her sight depends on his/her knowledge and the language which lets him/her describe everything around. I am developing this thought by mixing linguistics with photography and trying to explicate the photographical discourse. Additionally I am playing with my workshop and I am asking the question about the connection of photography with time, which is the most valuable for the collector.

Autumn Salon is one of the most significant event in the world of art. The first exhibition was in 1903 and the Salon is still expanding. At first there were only the works of painting, graphic and sculpture, later they widened the exhibition with photography. I can give you a curious detail. In 1904 Cézanne, who was mainly known as a painter, presented his photograph in Autumn Salon. Charles de Gaulle met his prospective wife admiring one of the works exhibited there. You could see various works by Matisse, Renoir, already mentioned Cézanne, Kandinsky, Chagall, Marie Laurencin, one day you could hear Debussy in person. There also appeared famous photographers: Man Ray and Willy Ronis. It is the place where fauvism was born and Cubism and Abstract Art made their first steps.

The artists who exhibit their works in the Salon represent various fields of art. The independent selection board works for many months and carefully chooses the artists who will have the opportunity to be presented in the Salon. It is for sure a great distinction but also a great challenge for the artist. There is always a catalog of the exhibition and during the Salon you can attend many additional artistic events. Last year the Salon was opened by the minister of culture of France and the mayor of Paris and the number of visitors is estimated at a few hundreds of thousands in a few days of the Salon.

The vernissage will take place on 12th October and I invite all interested who will possibly appear near the famous Elysian Fields or Grand Palais.

Smell of an Evening

jan 31, 2011 by Ewa Kozłowska

Vernissage at 6.00 p.m. on Feb. on 3rd 2011 in Historical Museum in Olecko. Photographical and poetic project “Smell of an Evening/Impressions from Olecko”. “Smell of an Evening” or breath at last, these are the words that were with me on preparing the project. They are an attempt to answer the questions about my town. I am far from the typical fascination with the region, and here in Olecko the thoughts that come to me are connected with the far worlds. It does not mean that the place of my birth is unimportant and unconcerned to me. I am trying to understand it as much as I can, but in the way to see more than what is just visible or to find something new in it, what (as I think) is good not only for me, and what I can notice in impressions and transients. I see Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Rome, Bratislava, the whole Scandinavia and many more places in Olecko. I see it when I look at it from the hill, when I enjoy morning fog lying on the lake or at winter night, when the water imprisoned under the ice knocks it and the sound is heard among sleeping tenement houses. It does not bring nostalgia in recollecting the past or our roots, or missing other places. This town is like we are and I am like it. I like to return to it and it is important to me. I like to smell an evening. I present it in my photograph and in my prose poems. Welcome.

Last Livs. Strong alcohol. Forgotten parts of seaside. Kolka Cape – the name that promises adventure, although it can happen differently. Sometimes it is mixed up with Kolski Peninsula, but it happens only when you haven’t been there yet. Later everything is similar. The isles where women wear skirts in flower pattern and matriarchy or something like this. Rig. Tallinn. Some other towns and villages. Meeting people. German, Russian and Finnish influences. Hamburg, St.Pauli

jan 4, 2010 by Ewa Kozłowska

Hamburg with its fischbrötchen, although it is sill current as a stereotype and the district of St. Pauli by the fish market, which is full of people only in the morning, and later it is just an empty space by the port and the setting for alternative solutions. The rest: the town hall, granaries, famous ships, countess Dönhoff, operas and musicals and the Reeperbahn seem to stay in the background and at the same time the street of sins is still expanding on new districts. I invite to St. Pauli. St. Pauli.

Paryż, elles@pompidou

dec 22, 2009 by Ewa Kozłowska

People In Paris stations are waiting patiently (or not) for their trains. Transport strikes, to sum up like every year. Numerous papers write about festive scandals and everywhere high-minded journalists repeat after politicians that surveillance is a necessity. A famous pop-star fell with a very serious illness, at the same time the world is in danger of “grey marriages”. People hate Nicolas because of “exigence que l’amour soit palpable”. Surrealists and women rule in Pompidou. “La subversion des images” and “elles@pompidou”- certaines oeuvres peuvent heurter la sensibilite du publique…

Lithuanian Portraits

mar 22, 2009 by Ewa Kozłowska

The photographs present the people I met in different parts of Lithuania during the realization of the project. The variety of places is visible in the variety of presented people. These were the citizens of little villages by whom I am always fascinated, the stages of change and old people trying to cope with it, citizens of Vilnius and recollections from the past, Tatar minorities, Polish and Russian references, folklore artists and the contemporary ones famous abroad. Fascination with the moment, I felt during all the meeting, brought fascination with Lithuanian themes. Living near Lithuania, to be honest next door, I am trying to join and discover the points of our complicated history and I am adding my own reflections. Sometimes I am filled with Yatvingian nostalgia, some other time I have a pleasant memory of the artistic Zarzecze Republic. The taste of Treyos Devynerios liqueur is now combined with real pictures. Some Lithuanian portraits..

2008/2009

mar 10, 2009 by Ewa Kozłowska

Qu’est ce que le jour doit a la nuit? – 2008 is finishing with this debate and 2009 is beginning. Paris welcomes it dressed in new colours, changed in artistic installations. “Dans la nuit, des images” in Grand Palais, “Musee haut, musee bas” from the theatre it is approaching the cinema, and in Romanian Embassy the play “Confession a Tanacu” is successful although people sometimes misunderstand it. College desBernardins, in its newly decorated walls, exhibits contemporary sculpture and BNF is looking for new talented photographers (Bourse du Talent). Just next to it there is a forgotten artistic squat with its old tower, and in Foundation Cartier they stage multimedia “Terre Natale”. Paris sometimes gets cold at night. It gets warmer when in Place du Châtelet under the banner of “Illuminos le monde” they light a menorah. Despite all other districts are open, the isle St. Louis remains a closed enclave although Hotel Lambert is present in disgrace on the first pages of all tabloids. In Belleville you can watch many concerts and poetry slam with all the lost artists. In the Hotel Sully Eric Salomon, Berlin photographer, inclines towards reflection. “Chemically” he stretches the imagination of Muse de la photogaphie. Somewhere in the background in Paris Jacques Prevert is roaming. Some photos.

The vernissage will take place on 6th December at 7 p.m. All the photographs have the same title “The Old Believers from Wojnowo” and show contemporary citizens of Wojnowo. Today, when nobody bans anyone its own identity, Wojnowo becomes a very special place. It is the place from which you can learn a lot, how to live respecting one another despite so many differences, and how to admit that multiculturalism and complicated history are the greatest treasures of Warmia and Mazury. More about Wojnowo. More about Wojnowo.

Meeting in Sejny

nov 14, 2008 by Ewa Kozłowska

On 7th November in the Centre Borderland I had a meeting with young people from Sejny. We talked about Romania and the way we see that country. The time of Ceausescu and his “golden period” , full of absurd and orders, still stimulates our imagination and induces reflection also about our reality. Through the prism of others we can observe ourselves and proceed with multicultural dialog.

Rue Léon, La Bellevilloise i May 68

jul 1, 2008 by Ewa Kozłowska

Chinatown in Paris dreams about London and Cannes Festival goes back to the past. The fight for better world continues in rue Leon, May 68 will be preserved in La Bellevilloise. Musee Dupuytren is unique with all the exhibits of forensic anatomy. Carnavalet shows cat’s court life, and of course “Le 10 bar” by Odeon – the dive as usually for better times, just like the whole nightlife on Seine, even in the places completely non-Parisian nowadays, and of course cosy, forgotten cinemas. Bicycles are still fashionable and colourful magazines are also promoting cycling in water, politicians promise changes and closed for intruders Sorbonne is coldly emanating with phobias of our times – control everyone and everything. Man Ray leaves traces in Pinacothèque, Galerie Vu presents a new talented artist, Extranos. In Luxembourg Garden on the fence like always hangs something good and Bibiothèque historique de la ville de Paris exhibits photographs by Andre Zucca presenting “Des Parisiens sous l’Occupation” and unleashing numerous discussions about the past, although it is the question of the role of propaganda also in today’s world, and the fact that one should think, which is not so obvious for many people. This is Paris in the anniversary of May 68. Some Photographs.
